  • In your first somatic therapy session, you can expect a combination of conversation, exploration of bodily sensations, and an introduction to the therapeutic process.

Here's a general outline of what someone might experience during their initial somatic therapy session:

    • Intake and Assessment: The therapist will likely begin by asking questions about your background, current concerns, and goals for therapy. This helps them gain a better understanding of your unique needs and creates a foundation for the therapeutic relationship.

    • Building Trust and Rapport: The therapist will strive to create a safe and supportive environment, establishing rapport and trust. They may explain the principles and approach of somatic therapy to help you understand the therapeutic process.

    • Body Awareness and Sensation: Somatic therapy places emphasis on bodily sensations and awareness. The therapist may guide you in bringing attention to your body, helping you notice physical sensations, emotions, and any areas of tension or discomfort.

    • Tracking Sensations: You may be encouraged to pay attention to specific sensations or areas of the body that relate to your presenting concerns. The therapist might ask questions about how you experience these sensations and how they manifest in your body.

    • Mind-Body Connection: The therapist will likely explore the connections between bodily sensations, emotions, and thoughts. This may involve discussing the impact of certain experiences or events on your body and how they relate to your overall well-being.

    • Experimentation and Exploration: The therapist may introduce simple somatic exercises or movement-based activities to help you deepen your body awareness and explore new ways of connecting with your physical experience. These exercises can vary based on the therapist's approach and your individual needs.

    • Integration and Reflection: Towards the end of the session, you may have an opportunity to reflect on your experience and discuss any insights or observations that emerged during the session. The therapist might help you integrate these insights into your overall understanding of yourself and your goals for therapy.

    • Homework or Recommendations: Depending on the therapist's approach, they may provide you with exercises or suggestions for further exploration outside of therapy sessions. This may involve practices to promote body awareness, self-care strategies, or readings to deepen your understanding of somatic therapy concepts.

It's important to note that the specific details and structure of the first session can vary based on the therapist's training, approach, and your individual needs. This outline provides a general framework for what to expect, but it's always best to discuss the process with your therapist directly to get a more personalized understanding of how they work and what you can expect in your specific sessions
